Ultrasound (USG) scan
What is an ultrasound scan in children?
Ultrasound scan uses sound waves to make pictures of various parts of the body. It gives no pain or harm to your child as it does not involve radiation. It is usually performed by a doctor (radiologist) or a radiographer (sonographer).
When should my child get an ultrasound scan?
As ultrasound scan can performed in almost any parts of the body, It is commonly used to aid in the diagnosis of various emergency or non-urgent conditions such as acute appendicitis or superficial tissue mass etc. What if my child won’t stay still for the ultrasound scan?
A ultrasound scan usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes. Sometimes it is useful to bring the child’s favourite toy, book or electronic device to keep the child occupied and distracted during the examination. In some circumstances, sedation may be required for detailed scanning in a very young child.
When will I know the result of the ultrasound?
Although the ultrasound image is available in real time, it may take some time to prepare a proper ultrasound report in the context of the complete clinical picture. Your child’s doctor will explain to you about the best treatment for your child.
