Lip retention cyst

June 3, 2018Health EducationChildrenLipSwelling
What is a lip retention cyst?
It is a painless, fluid containing swelling of the lip due to mucus from the small salivary gland leaking into the soft tissue. It is usually preceded by minor trauma (biting) to the gland. It usually ranges from 5 to 20mm in size and it commonly occurs at the lower lip, but it can also be found anywhere within the oral cavity.

What are the symptoms of a lip retention cyst?
It is usually painless, but sometimes it may cause local discomfort and interfere with chewing and talking. Further trauma/ biting to the cyst may result in bleeding, rupture, re-accumulation of the fluid (cyst recurrence). When the cyst grows in size, it not only gives a cosmesis concern but also may bring anxiety and doubt about the nature of the cyst.

Do my child need surgery for the lip retention cyst?
Although a small percentage of lip retention cyst may resolve on its own with time, a majority of the cyst will remain (due to the nature the condition). Therefore surgical excision is often necessary. Please discuss with your paediatric surgeon if your child is suitable for such procedure.
