Varicocele
1. What is a varicocele?
This condition is fairly common and usually affects young men. The veins inside the scrotum get swollen and bigger which may cause the testicle to shrink.
2. What are the Symptoms?
Most are completely symptomatic free. Some may feel mild scrotal discomfort/pain after standing up for a long time. Some may also feel the other testicle is swollen or looks smaller. Some men with infertility problem may later found to have varicocele.
3. Is there a test for a varicocele?
It is usually diagnosed by examination by a doctor. Sometimes an ultrasound scan is performed just to rule out uncommon association or problems related to a varicocele.
4. How is a varicocele treated?
There is no way to prevent it to develop.
Conservative: painkillers if needed. Wear more supportive underwear.
Surgical: it can be done for selected affected individuals by various means. It aims to stop the blood from flowing into the swollen veins.
