Penile Torsion
1. What is penile torsion?
It is a congenital rotation of the penile shaft along its axis. The penis is almost always rotated to the left (anti-clockwise).
It can be a stand-alone condition, or associated with hypospadias, chordee (penile curvature) or hooded prepuce (incomplete misshapen foreskin).
2. What are the symptoms of penile torsion?
It usually has no symptoms apart from skewed urine stream. Some parents are concerned about the cosmetic outcome or potential social embarrassment. There is no evidence that penile torsion would affect a boy’s growth of penis, nor erectile function /fertility.
3. When is surgery required?
If the magnitude of penile torsion is severe or it causes significant embarrassment, correction should be considered.
Circumcision should be postponed until the decision of penile torsion treatment is made.
